Abstract

This paper entitled “Cultural Idenity in R.K. Narayan’s The English Teacher” aims to explore the delination factors such as cultural conflict, alienation, identity crisis, and state of women in India.Culture, in general, indicates a particular kind of people. Cultural shock is a term which refers to the lack of ability to adjust oneself to new surroundings. It is a short of disorientation experienced by an individual. It is an important aspect in post colonial literature. R.K.NARAYAN is a regional novelist par excellence. Malgudi is Narayan’s only locale. Malgudi has it’s own distint individuality. So it`spicture of common life style and cultural identity of Indians. Malgudi is a symbol of the transational India shedding the old-age traditions and accepting the modern western civilzation. It is thus a bridge
between the East and the West , the Ancient and the Modern. In The English Teacher. Krishna, the English Teacher, was a product of a system of education which makes us ‘ morans, cultural morans’.The English Teacher is a song of love and marriage. It is a psychie, mystic and spritual study of some Indianness. Susila is a symbol of devoted hindu wife who give more importance to her family and her domestics duty. This fact is excellently portrayed in literature through  K.Narayans. The English Teacher.
