Abstract

Kinetics of oxidation of α-amino acids by Benzimidazolium chlororochromate (BICC) in anionic micelle medium with sulphuric acid has been studied. The reaction is first order each in [BICC], [α-amino acids] and [H+]. The reaction has been found to be catalyzed by H+ ions. The reaction rate increased remarkably with the increase in the proportion of Benzimidazolium chlororochromate (BICC) in the anionic micelle medium (Ammonium lauryl sulphate). The rates of oxidation of α-amino acids are enhanced more in the presence of Ammonium lauryl sulphate. The mechanism explains the synchronous C-C & NH bond fission and electron transfer to cobalt (III) centre. 1.00 mole of α-amino acids consumes 1.00 mole of BICC.
