Abstract

The Mayor of Casterbridge is one of Thomas Hardys typical "Wessex novels ", the novel begins in 1826 with a young couple, Michael and Susan Henchard , and their daughter Elizabeth. This novel narrates a series of story that happened after Henchard sold his wife when he was drunk at early, a century England, Casturbridge. We can summarize that hardy believed that human destiny was closely linked with character, it is “the novel of character and destiny” Michael Henchard is not a typical tragic man, he is a tragic hero. He was spontaneous and honest. Henchard is the "man of character" when the novel opens Henchard is a disconsolate twenty one - year - old hey –trusser who , in a drunken rage , sells his wife and daughter at a county fair, this novels character should be completely different . Compared with traditional women Susan, the mother, Hardy created a new daughter who desired for freedom and explored for self -
improvement. For their was a kind of mysterious people’s life, and their different destiny are the result of their different personalities .Susan as a tragic great mother ,Elizabeth as a independent daughter, the character and the destiny to deeply and systematically analyze the close relationship between destiny and character in the mayor of Casterbridge .
